Day 2 – Friday – Market, Spanish Lookout, & A Better Belize Camp

Friday was a bit slower-paced, which was nice since it felt like we had not slowed since arriving in Belize. That morning, we visited the local market that happens in Belmopan every Tuesday and Friday. Local vendors set up tents and sell food, clothes, tools, and handmade crafts.

We made a loop around the grounds and quickly found out that it was too hot to be walking around outdoors! We made it back to our vehicle and the thermometer read 108˚F. It gets hot in South Georgia, but being used to the air conditioner, we were struggling! Joanna would make herself sick if she got too hot because she simply did not know when to stop running around.

Spanish Lookout

It’s an unspoken tradition for us to visit the Spanish Lookout community in Belize. Spanish Lookout is a Mennonite community and is known across the country for Western Dairies, a business that is the top milk supplier in Belize and recognized for some of the best ice creams in the world.

Take a drool over this coffee flavor ice cream in a fresh-made waffle cone!

A Better Belize

Friday afternoon, we visited A Better Belize – Camalote Camp to visit with our friends that lead and work within the camp. Joey and Heather Barrs, who are Georgia natives, are the founders and directors of this Christian Campsite. Their facility hosts mission teams and helps connect these teams to needs in the community.

A small mission team was there hosting worship, lessons, and games with some of the community children while we were visiting and it didn’t take long for Judah to join in on the excitement.

Since Covid lockdowns, this team has done a lot to fine-tune their discipleship efforts in the Camalote community. Their outreach coordinator, Doris, became good friends with us when we visited in 2017. Heather shared with us how Doris went from being a housekeeper at the camp to office assistant and now community outreach director. Doris has been able to go door-to-door in the community creating a database of households so that Camalote Camp can reach these families when discipleship events are available.

The leaders at the camp have also organized weekly discipleship programs for the youth and adults in the community.

It was a blessing to see how this camp has flourished and grown in ministry opportunities since our last visit.

Doris’s daughters, Daniellie and Dianie, stole our hearts that year hanging out with us every day at the camp. We were able to get a little reunion with them while we were there!
