In this post...
About six months prior to this blog post, we were on a quick day-trip to the lake to celebrate a family member’s birthday. Those that know us know that we’re a pretty tight-knit family and spend most of our time together. As we were cruising along the quaint waters of Lake Blackshear, my sister-in-law, Erin, and I admired the homes and dreamed of having our own little getaway overlooking the lake.
At first, it was sort of a joke, but it wasn’t long before we were perusing Zillow to see what was for sale! In an instant, Erin was showing me homes and I was crunching the numbers. Numbers were flying across the calculator on my phone and I quickly got in mind that, “Hey, we could do this!” Within the next weeks, we had searched for home plans, met with our bankers, and twisted our husbands’ arms really hard! The next thing you know, we were putting down deposits for the land and construction of our very own lake home. I’ll never forget the day we were closing on the property and we couldn’t find a babysitter for our kids, so we drug them to the lawyer’s office with us, signing the papers with them in our laps.
A cool side story: the family that we purchased the property from was telling us about the plans that they had for the land, but the timing wasn’t right and they were ready to sell. I am a sucker for the way God works things out and fully believe in His signs and divine power. The guy asked to see what house we were building, so I showed him the plans on my phone. He paused, pulled his phone from his pocket, and showed me the house that they wanted to build on the property… it was the exact same house! It’s those kinds of confirmations that steady my heart when taking a big risk like this one.
Fast forward to now, construction on our lake house began the week of Christmas, and now framing, electrical, and plumbing are complete. It’s been great to see our vision come to life and be able to see the floor plan in reality.
Our intention with this property is to be another stream of income for our families from the rental income that it generates. It will be treated like a business, but we also look forward to spending time there with our own families from time-to-time, too. We can’t wait to share with you the complete process, all the fun details, and of course, the décor!
Until then, you can enjoy our progress so far!
We couldn’t have done it without these folks helping us move along quickly with our eagerness to get things done!
