Side Hustles that Require Less than $1,000 to Start

the blog

Business

One of my main joys of being an entrepreneur alongside my husband is the freedom that it grants us to live our lives with a flexible schedule, be our own boss, and be able to make a difference in other people’s lives in all sorts of ways. Here’s a look at how side hustles helped us get started!

Becoming a multi-passionate entrepreneur is not something that happened overnight for us. Our first business, Harp & Turner Construction, began as a side hustle while we were in college. We had goals then of this becoming the successful business that it is today, but it took a lot of work and wasn’t enough to pay all of the bills when we first got married. Justin was able to work full time with our business, but I had a full-time office job and our other partner worked on weekends to support his family. We worked at this as a side hustle until we were able to fully support three partners full time.

Sometimes a side hustle might be for generating extra income for you and your family, or it might be a situation like us where you eventually want to make a full-time living from the income you generate. Maybe you’ve been looking for ideas of something you could do, but you don’t have a lot of money to start your own business.

I’ve made a list of 6 side hustles you can start with less than $1,000!

Side Hustles to Consider

Start a Blog

Fancy seeing you here! It took me a while to figure out “how do people actually make money by blogging?” I didn’t realize there are so many ways to monetize your blog and make passive income. Bloggers make money by affiliate marketing, advertising, and even selling products like courses, private training, or e-books.

The costs of starting a blog are relatively low and you are able to work wherever and whenever as long as you have your phone or laptop and a good internet connection.

There are so many podcasts, courses, and YouTube videos out there that can help you develop the skills and techniques for running a successful, profitable blog.

Freelancing

Maybe you have a specific skill set but you’re into managing a website, social media, and all the things. That’s completely understandable! Part of having a side hustle is about making better use of your time, not finding more ways to SPEND your time.

There are endless freelance opportunities! The best part is, it can be totally free to offer your services to help others.

I personally love and use Upwork for so many freelance needs, especially in our construction business. Justin and I handle all of the office work for our construction company. Many times we are obligated to do other things that we don’t have time to review and estimate quotes for every new lead that comes our way.

I have a selection of freelancers that I am able to submit these job opportunities to and they can accept or decline. It’s so helpful because I can submit our work orders, say how much I am willing to pay, and indicate any deadlines. Once someone claims an interest in our posted job, I can review their previous work and reviews to confirm their capabilities and move forward with our job.

While we use this primarily for construction assignments, all types of freelancers use Upwork. It is a great space for developers, content creators, graphic designers, copywriters, marketing agents, and so. much. more!

Be a Virtual Assistant

I hired my first virtual assistant this year and it has been a total gamechanger for my workload and stress levels! I Know so often people are looking for legitimate work-from-home opportunities. Being a virtual assistant or bookkeeper is a great option that requires little to no money upfront.

We hired our assistant through Belay Solutions. I love their company and what they stand for! Take a look at some of their various job openings! Or maybe you’re looking to hire someone for your own business. If you do, don’t forget to tell them who sent you!

Travel Agent

This side hustle option holds a special place in my heart. In our early days of business, I talked about how I held on to my 9-5 day job to help our family have a stable income while we built our company. Once my son Judah was born, I had a deep desire in my heart to be home with him and needed to find a way to make that possible.

I decided to pursue a passion of mine and become a travel agent. I had given friends and family travel advice for years and knew I could do pretty well at it. After some research, I decided to become a travel agent through a “host” company. Basically, I was a subcontractor for the company and used their credentials for all of my clients’ bookings.

I paid a small monthly fee to be a member of the host agency where they gave endless learning materials and provided a community of seasoned agents. I personally used Outside Agents as my host company (not an ad, just a personal success testimony), but there are so many out there to choose from. You’ll need to research which is the best fit for you.

I found huge success booking trips for families and honeymoons for newlyweds! As our construction business grew, I made the decision to step away from being a travel agent, but it was a side hustle that brought much joy to me as well as my clients!

Photographer

Being a photographer is such a versatile option as a side hustle. Do you want to photograph families, newborns, engagements, weddings, real estate… or maybe all of the above? There are many robust camera options on the market that cost less than $1,000.

You could start by offering photographs for family and friends to showcase your style and abilities, then share those photos online and ask for referrals from those friends and family members.

There are lots of free photography courses and tips available on YouTube to help you learn. Even some of the best photo editing software that I’ve found is FREE. I love using Adobe Lightroom for all of my general photo editing needs.

Sell Your Creations

Want to write a book? Check out self-publishing through Amazon! You can write a book or design journals and planners to make available for purchase worldwide.

Maybe you have a knack for art and design? You can make your work into digital art and sell it on t-shirts, mugs, and nearly anything you can imagine with direct print dropshipping! Upload your designs through companies like Printful, Printify, or Redbubble and sell your products without having to buy and manage inventory.

Side Hustle Recap

Something amazing about the time we live in is there are so many creative ways to earn extra money! It’s important to remember that while there are endless resources available, there aren’t many opportunities that are “get rich quick” or require no work. It’s my passion to help others find the resources and knowledge out there that are legitimate and can help you make a better life for yourself. Not all side hustles are created equal. Not all side hustles will work for everyone. Do your research, read the reviews, and find the best side hustle ideas to make your goals happen.
